Library Assistants
This is a year-round part-time library assistant position scheduled for two Saturdays a month,
10AM-5PM, with opportunity to work additional Saturdays and/or occasional
weekday/weeknight coverage hours, working under the supervision of the Library Director
and/or the senior Library Assistant(s) on duty.
Compensation is $11.33 per hour with no benefits. A high school diploma or equivalent is
required. Previous library experience a plus. Must be comfortable with tech to be able to assist
patrons with library e-resources on their personal devices, on patron computers, and with the
self-serve copy/fax/scan machine. Must provide required state and federal clearances before
starting employment (PA Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI
fingerprinting; information will be provided).
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide excellent customer service to all patrons.
Answer phone in timely and professional manner.
Maintain a professional appearance, including appropriate attire and grooming.
Help maintain neatness and appearance of the entire library, occasionally requiring light
cleaning and tidying.
Ability to understand and follow instructions, and communicate effectively.
Ability to stand for up to three hours, stoop, bend, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
Be aware of patrons/activities in the library, including when patrons may need assistance
finding materials or using the self-serve copy/printing/fax station
Assist patrons with use of self-serve copy/printing/fax station
Become proficient in the use of SCPL circulation system and online public access catalog
(Sierra).
Check all library materials in and out.
Collecting fines and fees.
Responsible for or assistance with opening and closing procedures.
Enter and maintain patron registration records.
Empty the outside drop box and assist with outside book locker.
Process patron holds.
Maintain shelf order including shelving books and other materials, and shelf reading
throughout the library.
Assist patrons with reader’s advisory or in finding items in the collection
Assist patrons with basic questions related to computer use, library programs, special
events, etc.
Assist with processing and interlibrary loan services when necessary.
Process daily van delivery items.
Opportunity to assist with or independently run library programs for kids, teens, and/or
adults.
Attend regular trainings, workshops, and staff meetings/in-services as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Library Director and/or the senior Library
Assistant(s) on duty.
