Guidance Counselor Responsibilities

  • Organize and implement academic and career planning activities for students
  • Provide individual and group counseling focusing on academic planning, college applications, career exploration, internships, and financial aid processes
  • Collect and analyze student performance data to guide counseling services and program development
  • Facilitate scheduling processes and monitor students' academic progress toward graduation requirements
  • Consult with families and faculty, providing feedback and guidance on student progress
  • Collaborate closely with school leadership and social workers on student behavior management initiatives
  • Develop strong relationships with colleges, universities, and employers to foster opportunities for student placement
  • Present formal instruction or workshops on life skills, career choices, and college preparation
  • Coordinate referrals to internal and external resources for additional student support

Guidance Counselor Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • Teaching certificate with a guidance counseling endorsement highly preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant school counseling experience
  • Proven skills in project management, planning, and coordination
  • Strong background in stakeholder engagement, including successful interactions with students, parents, and staff
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and implement effective, solution-focused counseling practices
