Job Description:
The Shuttle Driver will provide transportation around property to COTA guests during a variety of large events. They will operate trucks, buses, and other vehicles, while providing top-class customer service to all shuttle riders. The Shuttle Driver will collaborate with other drivers and the Transportation Managers to ensure that the shuttle program runs efficiently, effectively, and in a safe manner. This is a Seasonal Part-Time position that requires onsite availability.
Essential Functions:
- Transport passengers to and from predetermined locations.
- Obey all traffic rules and regulations guiding the operation of shuttle services in his/her assigned area.
- Must be able and willing to drive different types of vehicles (i.e., Minibuses, Pickup trucks with passenger trailers attached, and safari trams).
- Carry out regular quality checks on the shuttle vehicle before and after each day’s run.
- Ensure that the vehicle is always clean.
- Assist disabled passengers in embarking and disembarking from the vehicle.
- Answer passengers’ questions in a polite manner.
- Report any delays or accidents along the route and ensure that any adverse situation is handled in a professional manner.
- Clock in and out on time during assigned events.

Vehicle Operation:
- Drive vehicles (Minibuses, Pick-up truck with passenger trailers attached, and safari trams) through an assigned route and adhering to established schedules and directions.
- Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustment to ensure passenger safety and reduce delays.
- Perform pre-and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
- Keep the bus clean and maintain an appropriate level of fuel.
- A fuel code will be provided by COTA staff for onsite fueling.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failure problems and complete required corresponding reports, including photos and personal information, if necessary.
Safety:
- Inspect vehicle pre trip and post trip inspections by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure vehicle can be operated safely before driving.
- Supervise vehicle departures and loading stop areas where assigned.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for vehicles.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguishers, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled routes.
Other:
- Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.
- Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and the number of passengers transported.
Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must have and maintain driving record that is acceptable according to minimum standards adopted by DPS.
- Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Proficient map reading skills.
- Reinforce excellence.
- Promote a positive and caring climate.
- Use effective communication skills.
- Become familiar with all routes to and from shuttle stops onsite.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s license (A or B CDL).
- There is an increase in wage for CDL drivers.
- Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility).
- Shall be subject to random testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations.
Physical Demand & Work Environments:
- Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; work irregular hours and occasionally work prolonged hours when approved by manager.
- Operate vehicle; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, fire extinguishers, and other equipment applicable to position.
- Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing and pulling.
- Prolonged driving; moderate walking; grasping/squeezing, wrist, and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching.
- Limited light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds) daily.
- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud during events.
