Position Summary

Job Summary

At Snyder County Libraries, we are seeking a motivated student to assist patrons and our team with technology education and assistance. As a Patron Technology Intern, you will collaborate with our team to facilitate technology-related programs and services to support our library's patrons and mission. Your primary role will be to promote digital literacy and provide educational opportunities related to technology. In this position, you will be instrumental in scheduling and holding technology appointments with patrons and staff and assessing the need for general technology-related instructional opportunities.

Snyder County Libraries offers a wide range of services to meet the needs of the community, including educational programs, such as story times, summer reading programs, homework help, and educational workshops; technology access, including public computers, internet access, technology training sessions, and digital literacy programs; resource lending, that include books, audiobooks, e-books, DVDs, and other multimedia resources; research assistance, such as access to databases, reference materials, and research support from knowledgeable staff; community engagement, such as cultural events, author talks, book clubs, and community meetings; and special services. Snyder County Libraries is dedicated to being a resource hub that supports the educational, informational, and recreational needs of the community, promoting a culture of learning and engagement.

Specific Responsibilities:

Primary:

* Provide Specific Technology-based Educational Opportunities

* Schedule specific technology-based appointments with members of the general public.

* Assign these appointments to appropriate staff, when applicable.

* Provide General Technology-based Educational Opportunities

* Collaborate with our visiting technology assistant/tutor to develop an educational opportunity to meet one or more community needs.

* Outsource the instruction of these programs to accredited individuals where applicable.

* Leveraging Web-Based Platforms for Outreach and Promotion

* Developing and maintaining community outreach opportunities through social media accounts, internet-based conference software, or other applicable platforms.

* Locating and promoting technology-based educational opportunities through online platforms.

* Managing Technology-based Resources

* Curating the library's collection of tablets, hotspots, cables, cords, headphones, microphones, cameras, and other technology-based resources so they are easily accessed in times of need.

* Addressing maintenance issues that may arise with any of these modes of technology.

Secondary:

* As time and staffing allow, assist in the research and/or development of a library app. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in gaining hands-on experience in app development, project management, and library science. The intern will work closely with library staff to research possibilities to develop a user-friendly app that enhances the library experience for our patrons.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

* Academic Interest program (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Library Science, or related field).

* Basic knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Java, Swift, HTML/CSS, JavaScript).

* Familiarity with mobile app development frameworks and tools (e.g., React Native, Flutter).

* Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

* Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

* Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

* Passion for libraries and interest in enhancing library services through technology.

Additionally, the internship builds relationships between the student, library staff and the broader community, promoting mutual understanding, collaboration, and ongoing support for library initiatives.

Overall, this internship not only develops valuable skills for the student but also contributes to meaningful projects that benefit the community. The alignment with service learning and community engagement values ensures a mutually beneficial experience, enhancing both the intern's educational journey and the quality of life in the community served by Snyder County Libraries.

This position consists of a combination of onsite work at Snyder County Libraries and remote work which can be completed on SU campus.

Additional Information

Mentorship:

Interns will be paired with dedicated mentors from the library's staff who will provide guidance, support, and regular feedback throughout the internship. The mentor will help the intern set achievable goals, navigate challenges, and develop both technical and professional skills. Regular one-on-one meetings will be scheduled to discuss progress, address concerns, and offer constructive feedback

Active Communication:

To ensure clear and consistent communication, interns will participate in weekly project meetings with supervisors and our team. These meetings will provide a platform for interns to share updates, ask questions, and collaborate with other team members. Additionally, interns will have access to various communication tools such as email, messaging apps, and project management software to facilitate ongoing dialogue with supervisors and staff.

Training and Resources:

Interns will receive initial orientation and training sessions to familiarize them with the library's systems, app development tools, and project management processes. They will also have access to a range of resources, including technical documentation, user guides, and online tutorials, to support their learning and project work

Feedback and Evaluation:

Regular performance evaluations will be conducted to provide interns with detailed feedback on their progress and performance. These evaluations will highlight strengths, identify areas for improvement, and set new objectives to ensure continuous development.

Collaborative Environment:

Interns will work in a collaborative and supportive environment where they can learn from experienced professionals and contribute their ideas. They will be encouraged to actively participate in brainstorming sessions, contribute to decision-making processes, and engage with various aspects of projects.
