Your future starts here. CPKC is hiring for March 2026. Purpose of the Position The conductor position is foundational, operating within the union agreement. A conductor works as a member of the train crew, assisting in switching rail cars, making or splitting trains in rail yards, or moving rail cars between yards. The role requires vigilance for safety, unscheduled shift work, extended periods away from home and working outdoors in all weather. Position Requirements Physically demanding work: walking up to 6 miles a day on uneven ground, climbing, lifting and pulling up to 80 pounds. Unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 operating environment. Up to 12‑hour shifts, including days, evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays. Ability to report within a two‑hour call window after scheduled rest. Excellent focus, attention to detail and multitasking ability. Strong communication skills, including clear radio instructions. Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions for long periods. Must pass physical job tasks, written examinations and understand safety/operating rules in English. Minimum 18 years old. High school diploma or GED. Valid driver’s license. Valid United States passport, passcard or enhanced driver’s license to allow entry into Canada. Position Accountabilities Work in train or yard service based on seniority. Execute specific train route instructions. Coordinate switching of cars, including coupling/decoupling and lifting equipment. Observe, interpret and relay signals and indicators affecting train movement. Signal crew members via specific signals or radio for engine/train movements. Maintain and follow GCOR, general orders, and bulletins. Provide flag protection and relay emergency signals. Move on and off moving or stationary equipment safely. Fill out forms such as train orders, switch lists and prepare clear reports. Handle emergencies and operate fire extinguishers and first aid. Training Program CPKC provides 15 weeks of paid in‑class and field training. Training rate: $261.72 per day for classroom and $42.90 per hour for on‑the‑job training. Average conductor earnings: approx. $120,000 annually, up to $139,000. Pre-Employment Requirements Medical and drug testing are required due to the safety critical nature of the role. A post‑hire qualification drug test may also be required. Medical assessment includes physical, vision, hearing and a negative drug test. Background investigation includes: Criminal history check.
